Nurseries should provide a nurturing and enriching space where children can play, learn, and grow. This foundation helps them develop into healthy, curious, kind, and caring individuals, fostering lifelong skills.
Scottish Early Years Association (SEYA) is a grassroots membership organisation. Run and funded by nursery owners, we advocate for private, voluntary, and independent nurseries, ensuring a positive impact on children’s education.
While some nurseries closed, many PVI nurseries stayed open for frontline workers’ children. From NHS staff to supermarket employees, they provided vital care, despite the need to fight for recognition and funding.

Across Scotland, around 50% of the children who attend nursery do so in private, independent, voluntary, or not-for-profit nurseries. In Glasgow and Edinburgh, more than half of children in nursery attend a non-Local Authority nursery.
SEYA wants to ensure that all private nurseries can provide the best quality childcare at affordable rates for parents. We want to see all of the children in our care unfold to their full potential, we want to continue to provide support and advice to the parents, and we want to recognise the value and talent of our workforce.
The COVID pandemic has shown how vital our sector is. While nurseries in other sectors closed their doors, many of our nurseries continued to provide care for the children of front-line workers – our NHS nurses, doctors, ambulance staff, all the way through to supermarket staff. However, the sector had to push for the recognition and additional funding needed to sustain the provision of this crucial service.
As society and the economy continues to recover, our settings will be called on even more to deliver the care for children as parents return to their traditional workplaces away from home or undertake study and training to move into new employment.

The Scottish Private Nursery Association (SPNA) is calling on the Sturgeon Government to include nursery care givers as key workers under the exemption to isolate if “pinged”.
The way in which government policy is designed and implemented is often misunderstood. Typically speaking, the Ministers and Cabinet Secretaries within the Government of the day decide on a policy, and it is then up to the departmental civil servants to introduce and roll out that policy.
We are pleased to launch the Scottish Private Nursery Association. We are Scotland’s only formal, incorporated association which will be entirely for private nurseries, run by the owners and managers of private nurseries.
